Mounts Bay Rum
Mounts Bay Rum is a clean-tasting rum with a light and floral aroma and a sweet flavor. It is perfect for sipping or mixing with soda.
The main ingredient for Mounts Bay Rum is molasses, which is derived from sugar cane juice that has been harvested and then processed into a sugary liquid. This is the key ingredient that sets rum apart from other dark spirits.
In addition to the raw material, Mounts Bay also uses pristine Barbadian water in their production process. Barbados is the only coral-based island in the Caribbean, allowing it to produce some of the purest water in the world.
They use a combination of Scottish McMillan double retort copper pot stills, Traditional Column Stills and recently recommissioned Irish Coffey Stills to achieve a variety of flavors. The Scottish McMillan pot stills produce heavier flavored, palate clinging rums while the Traditional Column stills produce fruity, grassy, and butterscotch notes.
In April 2019, the master distiller at Mounts Bay was appointed Trudiann Branker, the first woman to hold that role at this historic distillery. She is a native Bajan and graduated with a chemistry degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
Mounts Bay Black Barrel
Mounts Bay Black Barrel is a new rum from Mount Gay, the oldest rum distillery in the world. The rum is aged in heavily charred American whiskey barrels, and it offers a bold new extension to the brand’s legendary portfolio.
The Mount Gay distillery is located on the island of Barbados, and it has been producing rum since 1703. The distillery uses groundwater that has been filtered through coral limestone, which helps to create a rum that is full of natural yeast and has a rich flavor.
After marrying two different rums, Mount Gay Black Barrel is then finished in coal-charred Bourbon oak casks. The finishing process adds spicy aromas that are both balanced and bold.
The rum is very versatile and can be enjoyed neat or mixed in a classic cocktail, such as an Old Fashioned. It is also suitable for sipping on its own, or with ice. This is a very good addition to the Mount Gay line-up, and it is certainly worth looking out for.
